Milkweed is the centerpiece of Monarch butterfly recovery, as the only plant on which Monarchs lay their eggs. The caterpillars eat only Milkweed leaves, using toxic compounds in the plants to protect themselves from predation. Plants are perennial, dying to the ground over winter and emerging stronger every spring for many years. Drought-tolerant and deer-proof, and with those amazing flowers like tiny space stations. Flowers are present through most of the summer into fall, and attract bees and other pollinators.

Narrowleaf Milkweed is a native California variety, and is especially recommended for California gardeners.

Like most perennials, Milkweed grows into its full size by its second or third year, though it may flower in its first season. Seeds require cold stratification to germinate. You can let nature do it by planting seeds directly into the ground in the fall, or you can follow these steps for spring planting:
1) soak seeds overnight
2) put soaked seeds in a sealed plastic bag with damp (not soggy) seed starting mix
3) refrigerate 2-4 weeks
4) plant seeds in flats or pots, and let them grow 2 sets of leaves before planting out

I was not going to leave a review because I don't like saying negative things but after 3 months the popup asking me to leave a review is still in my face. So, I was disappointed that it took 1 week to get these mailed out and I searched the listing for shipping times and didn't see that. Otherwise I would have ordered from another store. Also was charged $3.50 for shipping but it arrived with a postage stamp! When a seller charges $3.50 it's assumed that pays for tracking and a bubble mailer. On the plus side, the seeds look great and they germinated fast.

The right type of milkweed for our monarchs! Thank you!!
